My curiosity for the world around me starts on my sofa and occasionally takes me to the far flung corners of the earth. So whether you’re an avid armchair explorer or don’t take annual leave unless you have your long-haul seats reserved, this blog will tickle those itchy feet!

The travel industry and the way I travel have both changed considerably since I started writing about my adventures in 2013. Over the next few years I’m on a mission to share my experiences and ideas on everything from green travel to UK staycations and even virtual exploration.

One thing that hasn’t changed is the reason why I travel: I’m incurably curious about this wonderful world, its people and its histories. I’m also passionate about how we can adapt to different cultures as we experience them and what we learn in the process.

    1. Thank you for your kind words! It’s lovely to meet someone else who loves the ACT. It’s such an overlooked area of Australia, that I feel we must work to promote its little-known beauty! I’m also a fan of the Outback and hope to explore further into it one day!

      1. I’m doing my best to share our corner of the Canberra region! We’re outdoorsy but love good cafes / restaurants and festivals so it’s perfect for us. I ask, where else can you be two hours from the beach, 3 hours from the snow and 3 hours from Sydney; bike paths, national parks, and galleries, and some of Australia’s best wines? … I’m with you on the Outback too, Rachel – would love to do a 4WD trip up the Birdsville Track or something.   2. YAY! Another fellow Aussie blogger and one that also loves travel too 🙂 We haven’t really explored UK as much as we would like! We visited back in 2006 and NOW we have a HUGE desire to visit it and road trip it!! Actually after watching the Tudors and understanding a bit more of the history during that time and the different places mentioned, we want to see them all again OR visit the ones we hadn’t last time.

    1. Hello, and welcome to The Long Way Home! After spending the last 3 years in Oz I’ve realised how much I took for granted here in the UK. It’s funny you mention the Tudors – although I’m not sure how accurately history is portrayed, I love the series and one of my favourite places to visit in London is The Tower of London. I love walking up those stone steps wondering who has gone there before me. I will be writing about it soon!

      The UK is a wonderful place and I hope you enjoy your road-trip planning! I will be planning some very similar trips myself and can’t wait to start exploring…

  3. I’m a Canberra girl! My family moved there from Melbourne when I was 11 (about 40 yrs ago!) It’s so wonderful, and rare, to meet someone who loves Canberra. I think it’s a fabulous city and love every time I go back. We plan on being there for next Christmas. I’ve lived in Canada for over 30 yrs, and now I’m nomadic. Search Canberra on the blog and you’ll find a few posts about it.

      It really is a small world isn’t it? I’ll definitely enjoy having a read of some of your Canberra posts and as you said it’s a great city that few people fully appreciate. I always tell visitors that it’s a city to live in and not just travel through for a few days. I’ll definitely return to Canberra one day – I miss my cycle commute to work and the wonderful national parks only 20 minutes drive away!

      I definitely need to dedicate some time to having a good read through your wonderful travels – your nomadic life sounds fabulous! I visited Canada a few years ago (the Vancouver area) and loved the big, broad landscapes – very much like Australia in a way I think…

      Glad you enjoy the blog and it has also allowed me to meet a fellow Canberran!

  4. I’ve never been to Australia but I keep promising myself, and my cousin in Perth, that one day I will. Best place in the UK? Anywhere with a quiet beach, but seeing as I’m from the dead centre of England…ah well.
    Favourite place to visit has to be Nova Scotia – such nice people that when I first got there I thought they were taking the p***. I mean who says “Good morning” to complete strangers they pass in the street? Where else do cars stop if you get too close to the kerb in case you might want to cross the road?
    Worst place to visit: there are a couple of hospitals in Tibet I wouldn’t like to return to.

    1. Thanks Danny! You should definitely get out to Australia at some point as I think you would like its massive landscapes and good hiking. One of my favourite places here in the UK is Rhossili beach, though for rich history it has to be the Tower of London! I would love to visit Nova Scotia and possibly do some sea kayaking there…and as for Tibet, well I’m sure the country’s beautiful but being in hospital anywhere isn’t fun!

  5. Welcome to blogging! One of our favourite places in UK is Portsmouth, home of the Mary Rose, Nelson’s flagship HMS Victory and HMS Warrior. All these ships can be seen at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. You’ll need to allow a day. Near to Portsmouth is the tiny village of Bosham. If I was to live in England, Bosham would be my home. It is so pretty. I wrote a post about it a while ago.

When we decided to house sit in Canberra for 3 months in mid winter our friends, and any one we told, thought we were mad, but Canberra has a lot to offer and not being a back packers destination gives the place such a different atmosphere to the other Aussie cities. We are loving our stay here.

    1. Ah, this answers my last question, and as you can see from my comment…I completely agree with you. It’s definitely a city for living rather than just passing through. I hope to move back there one day. I saw it was -5 the other day, although the snow on the Brindabellas must look beautiful!
